What does the 6G position mean?
The 6G position covers welding a pipe set at an angle and fixed in place. In practice it requires uphill, overhead, side and intermediate-position work. That is why a 6G certificate is treated as proof of very high skill.
Difference between 1G, 2G, 5G and 6G
In 1G the element can be rotated, in 2G the pipe is vertical, in 5G it remains fixed on the horizontal axis, and 6G combines several difficulties at once. A good 6G welder can usually handle most positions found on process installations.
Where is it needed?
Most often on process piping in refineries, petrochemicals, LNG terminals, energy and gas installations. There, weld quality directly affects safety, tightness and technical acceptance of the installation.
Materials and standards
